Interns in Action

SUMMER INTERNSHIP 2003

  Weronika Ziomek
McGill University, MBA student

Hello everybody,

My name is Weronika Ziomek (McGill) and I'm working with the Canadian Nature Federation (CNF) - Pelee Island, Ontario. Transporting myself to this enchanting little Island in the middle of lake Erie was a little challenge of its own! This Island has a year-round population of about 250, and in the summer it jumps up to about 1,000 (tourists make up the difference). My project will undoubtedly affect most Islanders in the long-run. CNF, with its local partner, is setting up a demonstration farm on the Island, to farm sustainably.

They want to demonstrate to local farmers through example that a little crop diversity can go a long way, not only benefitting the environment, but also putting a few extra dollars back into each farmer's pocket. This project has a large scope, encompassing the entire Island and not this pilot project alone. The last makes this a very challenging project since most conservation organizations focus only on saving one bird species, for example, or on digging a new water well. My task involves the writing of a business plan, some market analysis and determining value-added crops and activities not only for our farm, but also for other farmers who would be willing to take on a new agricultural challenge (farming sustainably). I believe that this project will open my eyes (better than any university textbook could!) to the reality and implications of every phase in a non-profit, environmental organization. I would like to thank all those who made it happen for allowing me to take part in it. I wish all the interns a positive, successful, challenging and eye-opening experience.

Sincerely,

Weronika Ziomek
