Hello, my name is Tanya Dossa and I am originally from Calgary, Alberta. I completed a Bachelors degree at Queen’s in Life Sciences and then a Masters at McGill in Human Genetics. Since relocating to Montreal, I have had the opportunity to work at the Shriners Hospital for Children for three years and am currently enrolled in the MBA program at the John Molson School of Business.
This summer, I will be working at the Urban Ecology Center (www.urbanecology.net ). The Center (UEC) is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to promote social ecology in the neighbourhoods of Montreal. Their goal is to build and share expertise concerning the most viable approaches to sustainable urban development and how they may best be implemented in neighbourhoods and the city. The UEC focuses mainly upon three tasks: education, research and citizen self-help; all aimed at improving the quality of life in the surrounding community.
My role will consist of developing a strategic marketing plan to secure financing for the Centers ongoing projects, as well as to build partnerships with large local corporations who are committed to environmental and ecological issues. I will achieve this by promoting the UEC within the business sector of Montreal, in order to secure long-term funding and form community relationships. In addition to this main task, I have been developing an official system for each of the administrative procedures carried out within the organization.
I see this internship as a great opportunity to learn about non-profit fundraising, as well as to explore the intricate details of a small organization carrying out multiple projects with limited resources. I am very excited to be here, as I am in the company of passionate, dynamic and committed individuals who work tirelessly to advance their cause. I wish you all the best in your internships!
Cheers,
Tanya
