Hi everyone,
You will have to excuse my tardiness on getting this email out; I don't know why I waited until the last minute, but I've read everyone else's bio so far and it sounds like there are some great people doing some awesome work this summer through this program.
Anyways, my name is Rob Martin, and I am a HBA Candidate (2007) at the Richard Ivey School of Business in my hometown, London, ON. For the summer I am working as an intern at the Thames Region Ecological Association (TREA) which is also located in London.
TREA is very similar to the EAC, where Anne Castonguay is working, in that we deal with local environmental challenges. While in London we don't have the same issues as they do on a coastal area, we do have some big issues dealing with (hopefully) a pesticide bylaw in London, local transportation/congestion issues, and air/soil quality for the region.
So far at TREA I have spent most of my time co-ordinating London's annual Bicycle Festival & Commuter Challenge, which is an event that looks to create behavioural changes by encouraging Londoners to seek active and sustainable methods of transportation. As the only employee at TREA, I was "pushed out of the nest" very early in my internship and so I've learned the job on the fly, but I feel that the event has gone very well this last week, especially thanks to the dedicated volunteers that support TREA. I have also spent some time working with companies such as Siemens VDO (London) and Sterling Trucks (St. Thomas) to educate their employees on environmental/sustainability issues.
Summer has been going great so far - I also do some work with the local (Intercounty League) baseball team, the London Majors, so if anyone is down in London and wants to spend some time at a game let me know (London boasts having the oldest continually used baseball diamond in the world, so come be a part of history). I don't have a photo of me doing real work, but heres one of me that appeared in the London Free Press as a promo for TREA's Bicycle Festival & Commuter Challenge.
Thanks,
Rob
