Greetings fellow CEI interns,

I am an MBA student going into my second year at Rotman in Toronto.  I spent the last four years in Shanghai and Beijing, where I worked in health care policy, microfinance and internet capacity building for poverty alleviation, and acted as an entrepreneur and consultant serving clients in banking and insurance sectors, IT service-outsourcing, and health sciences.

My project for this summer is with MBAs Without Borders, a not-for-profit engaged in the field of international development.  Their mission is to contribute to the business and social development of upcoming nations through work rotations of MBA professionals. They develop projects within five industries: Healthcare, Agriculture, Financial, Income-Generation and Climate Change. Within these industries, we partner MBAs with local businesses, international businesses and NGOs.

Over this summer I’ve been putting together an overall marketing plan for MWB’s coming year, and I have developed a membership engagement and organization model. In addition, I have been consulting on the creation of an online social network and information portal, designed to promote knowledge sharing and communication between MBAs, social entrepreneurs, not-for-profits and associated organizations.  I will also help to create a plan for a fundraising business, which leverages MWB’s core competencies and operates in accordance with the organization’s focus on promoting sustainable development.

My experience working with Tal Dehtiar, a MWB cofounder and current president, has been excellent.  The projects and subject matter has allowed me to contribute learning from past experience, as well as to extend my understanding of the role of business in development.  Working remotely continues to be a slight challenge, but Tal has been 100% helpful and responsive.

There are clearly a number of excellent and committed CEI program participants out there, and I am honoured to be a part of this program.  I wish all of you the best with your projects this summer!

Best Regards,

Mary Ross
