Interns in Action

SUMMER INTERNSHIP 2003

  Martin Toner
Richard Ivey School of Business, MBA student

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone has been enjoying a break from school and the opportunity to be part of something positive with their respective internships. My name is Martin and I am working with SHARE (The Shareholder Association for Research for Education). SHARE is a non-profit that primarily works with pension trustees, encouraging them to become more active and educated fiduciaries to their fellow plan holders, especially when it comes to the socially responsible quality of their plan's investments. They also engage companies to adopt more responsible policies with respect to the social and environmental impacts of their business.

The main goal of my internship is to study the correlation that good corporate governance and socially responsible management practices have had on firm performance. I will also be working on a few other projects, which are related to this study. One will be documenting corporate governance indicators in Canada by surveying the proxy circulars of TSX-listed companies. Another project is to compile the different corporate governance guidelines of worldwide exchanges, their governing commissions and other leaders, in promoting responsible governance. Hopefully the results of these projects will build SHARE's capacity to engage companies for positive social change and help continue to increase the size and influence Canada's Socially Responsible Investment Community has on the rest of Corporate Canada.

I returned to school to pursue a career in Finance and had no idea that my interest in socially responsible investing would take me out West to Vancouver, but I am loving it out here. I am from Toronto, and unfamiliar with Vancouver, but I look forward to using my weekends to enjoy the outdoors out here once I write the CFA exam. Good luck to everyone this summer, be good and have fun.

Sincerely,

Martin Toner
