Hi all! My
placement is at the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA), which
is
the largest environmental management agency located at the western
end
of Lake Ontario.
For the past few years, they have led many environmental
projects to help
ensure a safe and sustainable community, such as providing educational
programs geared to the environment, water shed management, and the
protection of water and land. The HCA's work is also focused on
regulating
construction and development in areas that may be environmentally
fragile.
My role in the HCA Business Development Department
is to help generate
revenues through assisting with sales and operations of corporate
events
which will be used to
fund HCA projects (like those listed above), properties and facilities.
Such
properties include, Confederation Park, Christie Lake, Valens, Dundas
Valley, and Spencer Gorge/Webster Falls, all within the Hamilton
region.
This summer, we will be holding over 70 corporate picnics that caters
up to
50-7000 people, where I will be helping run, plan and organize such
functions in the office as well on the day of
the picnics. Such work consists of attending meetings, booking,
contacting
and researching suppliers suitable to our client's needs as well
as other
administrative work.
I have met a lot of friendly staff and am impressed
with the main office
building and location, which is centralized along a beautiful luscious
forest; you wouldn't be
surprised to see a group of deer out your window! I look forward
to making a
positive contribution to HCA and it has been a pleasure working
for them
from the very start. I hope everyone is having a good start on their
interns, good luck, have a great summer and I look forward to hearing
from
your own experiences!
I would like to thank CEI for giving students,
like me, an opportunity to be
involved with businesses that continuously contribute to the well
being of
communities. The program definitely shows a different side of the
business
spectrum and exposes
students to another category of business that is not regularly emphasized
in
academia.
