Interns in Action

SUMMER INTERNSHIP 2001

  Keith Sutherland
McGill, BComm student

Hi,

During the summer of 2001 I did a CEI internship with the Centre for Community Organizations/Centre des organisms communautaires (COCo), a Montreal non-profit whose purpose is to help other non-profits by building the capacity and strength of organizations and communities through accessible training and resources. COCo's philosophy is that strong community groups and organizations are essential to create active citizenship, local democracy, social justice, and socio-economic development within communities.

My job at COCo was to build a web site to do a number of things: to create awareness among other non-profit organizations about COCo and the many ways it can help them; to build connections and synergies between non-profit organizations; and to be an online source for tools, educational resources, and job/volunteer postings that will benefit non-profit organizations.

I started from scratch, working mostly independently to take the web site from an idea to a finished product. It was a terrific learning experience that taught me a great deal about web site design and hosting, project management, and the non-profit sector and its challenges and opportunities. It was also a great work experience – I enjoyed the time I spent there, and Michael Stephens, the co-director of COCo who supervised the project, was a pleasure to work with. The site is still growing and improving, with goals to eventually have web-conferencing capabilities. You can check it out at www.coco-net.org.

Thanks a lot to CEI and COCo for a great internship!

Cheers,
Keith
