Hi! I am currently
working at the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee (CARC) for the
summer. I am the Volunteer Program Coordinator. Let me explain what
CARC does and what my position entails.
CARC focuses on socio-environmental sustainability
in the north. They are concerned with development and its effects
on the northern people, wildlife and the environment. Some issues
that they are involved in are the Mackenzie pipeline project and
the development of diamond mines in The Northwest Territories. In
general, they try to make sure that any development done in the
north is sustainable, environmentally friendly and not harmful to
northern societies.
My position at CARC involves managing the volunteer
program. I have been busily trying to recruit and maintain volunteers
to help out in their head office in Ottawa. Once the organization’s
need for volunteers is filled, I will create a volunteer policy
manual that can be used by future coordinators. I will also plan
educational events that will take place in the fall.
The work at CARC is exciting and very interesting.
I am learning a lot and am able to apply the skills I have learned
both in school and my extracurricular activities.
Thank you CEI and CARC for this opportunity.
