Hello everyone,

My name is Guillermo Mayta and I’ve just started to work with Boyle Street Community Services (BSCS) in Edmonton.  I am from Peru and I came to Canada last year to start my MBA at the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario.  I will graduate from the program next spring.

Boyle Street Community Services (BSCS) is a non-profit organization that has a history of more than 30 years of working with people living in poverty in the inner city of Edmonton.  BSCS believes in developing people’s capacities through community involvement.  To do this, they provide their members with a place to belong, someone to talk to, and something to do.  Therefore, the BSCS mission emphasizes building and providing community support for their clients through community-based programs such as risk youth outreach, young family support and counseling, community development, and a drop-in centre.

My main role during the following three months involves developing a marketing plan that will raise BSCS’s awareness among all members of the Edmonton community, including corporations and donors.  I will also work on the review of BSCS’s strategic plan to support the marketing strategy formulation, and at the end of the project I will have the opportunity to help with the alignment of the marketing, fundraising, and communications plans.

I believe that BSCS, and its great team, is a key element in Edmonton’s inner city.  The commitment they show, on a daily basis, supporting and advocating for people suffering different kinds of disadvantages is a valuable asset for the Edmonton community.  This amazing project is giving me the opportunity to learn more about non-profit organizations while I contribute to the community development. Since I have been here, I have learned something new everyday and I am sure the reward at the end of my internship will be fantastic.

I would like to thank CEI for making possible this kind of experience among the students of the different business programs.  CEI internships, with their emphasis on social responsibility, are a great complement for our business education.

I hope all of you are enjoying your summer experience as I am.  Good luck to all of you in your projects.

Best regards,

Guillermo Mayta
