Hi! My name
is Elana Ludman and I am working at Santropol Roulant this summer.
I am very excited by this opportunity so let me share with you a
bit about
the organization and what I will be doing this summer.
This community organization is located in the
heart of downtown Montreal.
It uses food as a tool to break social barriers and isolation. Through
its
meals-on-wheels program it helps bring people of all ages, cultures
and
background together. Over 200 volunteers (of which over a third
are under
the age of 35) deliver 80 - 100 meals daily to people living with
a loss of
autonomy. Although their meals-on-wheels program is the foundation
of this
organization, they are continuously growing and expanding. In recent
years
they have started a roof-top-garden, which they use to grow vegetables,
herbs and spices for their food. However, this projected is also
part of a
greater goal of greening our community. Santropol Roulant also has
many
other activities that can allow people to get involved, for example
they now
have a Friperie and a bike workshop on site. As their slogan would
suggest,
many of Santropol Roulant's activities are part of a greater effort
to help
build a strong intergenerational community.
Now that you know a little bit about the organization,
let me tell you a
little bit more about what I am doing this summer. Santropol Roulant
is
celebrating its 10th birthday this year and I have been hired to
help
organize the event that will take place on June 9th, 2005. I will
also be
helping to organize and coordinate other "Roulant" events.
For example, I
will be coordinating and organizing promotional/outreach booths
that will be
set up during the summer, such as the one at the famous four day
Saint
Laurent Street Sale in Montreal taking place June 16th -June 19th.
Another
event I will be helping to organize is Santropol Roulant's 9th Annual
Bazaar
taking place September 10th at the "Roulant" (the corner
of St-Urbain and
Duluth). This one-day event is one of their biggest fundraising
events, and
fundraising is very important for them since Santropol Roulant is
20% self
funded. Finally, I will be assisting in the re-design of the website,
this
is not a huge task, but something new and different.
As you can see my summer will be jammed packed
with events and organizing.
I am very excited by this, since Santropol Roulant has already proven
to be
a unique organization with great, motivated and passionate people.
By the way, if anyone is in Montreal this summer,
please feel to stop by and
say hi!
Have a great summer!
Elana
